Lion’s Mane mushrooms are described as having the taste of lobster and crab, with the look of a lion’s mane. Their dense body means that the mushroom remains succulent and meaty when cooked. This mushroom can be used to help promote a healthy lifestyle.
All of our mushrooms are grown on natural, wood-based substrates with no chemicals being used. We harvest our mushrooms at the optimum stage to ensure a long shelf life and the best possible taste.
We aim to have all our fresh mushrooms ready to dispatch whenever there is an order, but because it is a growing fungi sometimes dispatch may take longer. We will get in touch if this is the case.
Lion’s Mane Mushroom (Hericium erinaceus) is an edible and medicinal mushroom belonging to the tooth fungus group. It is a beautiful and unusual looking mushroom comprised of layers of cascading spines and gets its name from the Lion’s Mane Jellyfish – not the big cat like you’d think. It’s now a rare find in the UK and is classed as an endangered species so shouldn’t be picked if found in the wild. This is a slow growing species with a superb sweet, mild flavour and a meaty texture that gets compared to lobster. Excellent fried wit garlic, pressed into mushroom steaks or made into no-crab cakes.
Each kit is designed to produce a kilogram (1000g) of delicious fresh mushrooms which will grow over two, and sometimes three, separate flushes. First flush at around 20 days, second flush around 40 days etc. We are always happy to support you and answer questions you may have as you grow. Each kit includes a 2.7kg ready to fruit block of mycelium growing on hydrated hardwood sawdust (a saw mill by-product) & soya bean hulls (a food industry by-product), humidity tent and easy to follow instructions. All you need to provide is a spray bottle and you are ready to grow your own mushrooms!
The kits are about the size of an A4 piece of paper and twice that height so don’t take up a lot of room – perfect to tuck in a shaded corner of a room. Temperature range for fruiting is between 16 and 24ºC and should be grown indoors. The kit you receive is a pre-inoculated and fully colonised block of hard wood saw dust and soya bean hulls. The mycelium has grown all the way through which means it is ready to produce mushrooms on arrival. All you need to do is open it up and start spraying. Delicious gourmet mushrooms will appear a week or two later. Kits are best used within a week of receipt but will store unopened in a cool place for up to four weeks.
